Feral Colony Cats Welcomed As Vermin-Killing Barn Cats

Some cats are easier to love than others, and barn cats have a rep to be the latter.

Clear Creek Cat Rescue is dedicated to rescuing cats in need and finding them appropriate homes. Volunteers pick up homeless, sick, and injured strays as well as colony cats from the Mat-Su to Homer.
Clear Creek Cat Rescue Judy Price: “We take in cats that people call us about who are living outside on their own.  They are usually wild cats, but not always.”
While kittens are easy to place, barn cats are another story.  First of all, its difficult to find folks willing to take a recently trapped feral animal hissing and clawing into their home.
Clear Creek Cat Rescue Judy Price: “It takes a particular kind of foster who’s willing to foster a feral cat.”
Price sats getting the feline into a warm, safe environment is an important step in determining their true personality.
Clear Creek Cat Rescue Judy Price: “There are a fair number of these trapped cats that are thought to be feral, that aren’t feral, and they end up actually being someone’s family cat that has just been lost or abandoned, and just taken up residence with this colony of feral cats.”
Many Alaskan shelters simply do not have the resources to sort out large groups of feral cats, and many end up being euthanized. There’s simply not many options in this area.
Clear Creek Cat Rescue Judy Price: “In Kenai, there’s just Clear Creek Cat Rescue and then Cat Tree & Barkery, and Cat Tree & Barkery doesn’t take feral cats in general, and Clear Creek does not have that many fosters.”
Price says colony cats are very cat-social, so Clear Creek Cat Rescue adopts them out in pairs to those willing to provide fresh water, a warm place for them to get out of the weather, and supplemental daily food.
Clear Creek Cat Rescue Judy Price: “Cats end up giving them food, water, and cares for them. They may only bond and be friendly with that one person, but it’s a really strong bond.”
So far over $50,000 in Pick.Click.Give donations have used by Clear Creek Cat Rescue to give 500 cats a year vaccinations, microchips, and spay/neutering. Many cats, particularly the feral ones who have been on their own in less than ideal circumstances, often have serious and life-threatening conditions that require extensive medical care.
