With Monday’s announcement of the Bill Walker – Byron Mallott re-election campaign, follows speculation on how this historic Unity Party ticket will play out in 2018.
Mallott made history as the Democratic primary gubernatorial nominee set aside his race to drop on the Independent ticket under former long standing Republican Bill Walker. When the pair were sworn in they became the first non-partisan administration in Alaska history.
Fast forward to 2018 – and the game pieces have moved around Alaska’s political chess game.
Huffington Post Political commentator Don Mitchell: “There chances are very problematical. The reason being they were able to put together their ticket after the Democratic primary…The Democratic Central Committee made a decision not to replace him on the ballot. This time around I find it difficult to believe that there will not be people on the Democratic primary ballot.”

Winning an election is all about the numbers, and not having any competition on the ballot from the Democrats is what many attribute the Unity Party win to. Mitchell speculates that regardless of who is chosen as the Democratic nominee – the balance of power will break up the unity.
Huffington Post Political commentator Don Mitchell: “That will attract a certain percentage of the people that just vote a democratic ticket. Let’s say that is only 8-10% of the General Election vote, that vote is going to come out of the hide of the Walker-Mallott ticket…I believe the next governor of Alaska will be whomever wins the Republican primary.”
