Personalized Learning Marks New Era In Education

With school children starting to settle into their routine, parents in the Kenai Peninsula School District might be starting to notice a difference in engagement.

Every KPBSD school is starting the year doing some degree of work with personalized learning. Personalized learning may sound as foreign as “new math”, but it’s really stepping back to the early years of American education where teachers in one room school houses tailored their delivery to meet the needs of individual students.

Skyview Middle School Teacher Patrick Dwyer: “Kids want to learn differently than adults do. The reason why is because they grew up using technology.”

Personalized learning enables student voice and choice in what, how, when, and where they learn – offering an independence in educational delivery that many millennial parents are looking for.

By tailoring learning to the strengths, needs, and interests of every student and providing flexibility, it’s hoped that students will have the support they need to master skills at the highest standards possible.

Skyview Middle School Teacher Amy Angleton; “Personalized learning matters to me because I want to be able to create an environment where students find joy in exploration and taking ownership in their own learning.”

Those who got bad taste in their mouth from No Child Left Behind left may find Personalized Learning more palatable.  Instead of expecting students to fit the a generic mold or adapt to structures that may not be successful for them – schools, classrooms, and instruction is tailored to better respond to the individual student need.
